Washington continues to hold out hope for a trade of Robert Griffin III, the only reason they haven’t already cut him. Per a league source, Washington would take anything they could get for Griffin -- even a seventh-round draft pick.
Last week, team president Bruce Allen said, “We’ve heard from some teams that are interested,” an acknowledgement that later was repackaged into a splash report from ESPN that at least two teams have talked to Washington about a possible trade.
Ultimately, it all hinges on Griffin’s willingness to re-do his contract before his current $16.155 million salary becomes fully guaranteed on March 9. As PFT has reported, Griffin would consider it for the right team, because if said “right team” is willing to give something up to get Griffin, it shows that the interest is genuine.
It nevertheless remains highly unlikely that Griffin, the No. 2 overall pick in 2012, will be traded. Instead, Washington most likely will cut him. Whoever gets him will have to give up nothing, and Washington will get nothing for the guy for whom they gave up three first-round picks and a second-round pick.
